Those who serve our country in uniform risk their lives to defend and protect the freedoms we all value. But far too often, our nation's veterans don't receive the support they've earned or the services they need when returning home. California's labor unions are taking the lead to change that.
"Labor and Veterans -- Partners in Service" is a new project sponsored by California unions that spearheads helping veterans on three fronts: providing volunteer service, opening doors to good jobs and a special Veterans Day event to honor our heroes for their service.
CLEAN Carwash Campaign: Building Power Through Community Partnerships
After years of organizing, Los Angeles carwash workers successfully negotiated contracts with three carwashes and gained workplace rights most workers should be able to take for granted: sick leave, access to health care, workplace safety, lunch breaks, living wages and respect.
The carwash workers were successful, in large part, through the strength of community-labor partnerships: the United Steelworkers teamed up with the Community Labor Environmental Action Network (CLEAN), faith-based groups such as Clergy and Laity United for Economic Justice and low-income immigrant rights organizations such as the Wage Justice Center and Koreatown Immigrant Workers Alliance.

The Hands Off Social Security Flash Mob appeared in San Francisco on Dec. 7, 2012 featured dozens of seniors and others taking action to stop cuts to Social Security, Medicare or Medicaid and end the Bush era tax cuts so the top 2% finally pay their fair share. The Flash Mob and was sponsored by California Alliance for Retired Americans and Jobs with Justice.
